Leipzig is a hub for science and research, characterised by a high density and diversity of universities and non-university research institutions, offering great potential for interdisciplinary and cross-institutional research. The Leipzig Science Network (LSN) is the joint network of universities and research institutions in Leipzig and the surrounding area. It promotes cooperation, develops synergies in research, transfer and infrastructure, and strengthens the national and international visibility of Leipzig as a centre of science.

What is being funded?

The LSN is a platform for developing new research topics across institutions that have the potential to grow into larger collaborative projects. With the pilot call for proposals ‘LSN NetzWerkstatt’, the LSN is promoting the initiation of research collaborations. The aim of the funding is to connect researchers from corresponding subject areas and to develop new joint research topics. Topics that are relevant to as many departments and institutions as possible are particularly welcome.

Funding is available for workshops that serve to promote cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary networking and bring together researchers from LSN member institutions to discuss an innovative research topic. Funding covers a maximum of EUR 2,000 for event costs (e.g. room rental, catering, fees).

If funding is approved, the approved amount is not paid out to the applicants as a cash sum. Instead, the LSN finances the measures planned and approved in the application directly in consultation with the applicants.

Who can apply?

Applications are open to postdoctoral researchers from institutions that are full members of the Leipzig Science Network. Applications must be submitted jointly by individuals from at least two different full members of the network. Applications involving more than two full members may be given priority in the selection process.

Required application documents

  • Information about the applicants (CV, contact details)
  • Brief description of the project (German or English, max. 600 words)
  • Time and budget plan, including details of the funding amount requested

Deadline

Applications can be submitted until 31 March 2026. Please contact the managing director of the LSN, Dr Kathleen Schlütter, in advance for a brief consultation: 0341/22304303 or This email address is being protected from spambots. Research institutions in Leipzig stand against anti-democratic sentiment and right-wing extremism and for academic freedom, human rights and democracy

The research institutions in the Leipzig region take a firm stand against attacks on our democracy. Respect for the dignity of all people, the free democratic basic order, pluralism, tolerance, international exchange, and diversity are prerequisites for our common life on campus, for successful research and the best study conditions.

The fact that anti-democratic movements are on the rise and misanthropic rhetoric is gaining support fills us with concern. People from all backgrounds and all over the world study and work at our scientific institutions, contributing every day to solving problems and answering pressing questions about the future of our society. Only in freedom can we reflect and work together in this way.

Hatred and marginalisation do not produce solutions. They create fear of discrimination and stifle innovation. We call on people inside and outside our research institutions to defend the fundamental values of democracy at all times and to take a stand against right-wing extremism.

The research institutions in the Leipzig region will continue to bring together people from diverse cultural, geographical, religious and social backgrounds at our cosmopolitan region. We will continue to engage in discussion and conduct our research in an open, fact-based and unbiased manner. These values are essential to us.

The toxic effects of bias make headlines every day: sexual harassment, racial profiling, the pay gap. As humans, we are biased. Yet few of us are willing to admit it. We confidently make snap judgments, but we are shockingly unaware of the impact our assumptions have on those around us. The documentary BIAS follows filmmaker Robin Hauser on a journey to uncover her hidden biases and explore how unconscious bias defines relationships, workplaces, our justice system, and technology. BIAS contemplates the most pressing question: can we debias our brains?

Speaker: Nursemin Sönmez Nursemin Sönmez

Racism is anchored in our society and in our daily life. Racism still has an effect today even where one might least suspect it: in science and research. The lecture illustrates the causes and manifestations of individual, institutional and structural racism in everyday life and in the workplace, especially in institutions of education and research. It focuses in particular on academic racism in science and research. However, the lecture also shows what possibilities we have as a community, as individuals, and as a research institution to counter racism in its various forms. The speaker Nursemin Sönmez is a systemic organizational consultant and diversity trainer. She has many years of experience working with universities, political foundations and educational institutions. Her presentation is intended as an impulse for a stronger exchange and structural implementation of a discrimination-free environment in our research institutions. The event will be held bilingually (German and English).

The network of the science location Leipzig

Great names stand for science in Leipzig: Leibniz, Wundt, Ostwald. And today? Today, excellent scientific findings testify to Leipzig's vibrant spirit of research, be it with Svante Pääbo in paleogenetics, Annette Beck-Sickinger in biochemistry, or Dieter Kopinke in environmental research. Leipzig is an outstanding science location and, with its university, several colleges, and numerous non-university research institutions, it has an unusually high density of renowned scientific institutions. Thanks to the commitment of the major German research communities, with the help of EU funding and investments by the Free State of Saxony, an outstanding infrastructure has been created in close cooperation with the city of Leipzig. Today, Leipzig plays in the premier league! With this network, we want to increase the visibility of Leipzig as a science location and support our scientists to work creatively, freely, and cooperatively.

Welcome To Leipzig

The Welcome to Leipzig project aims to improve the structures for welcoming international guest researchers and highly qualified employees from all over the world and to simplify bureaucratic hurdles in the process of their arrival in Leipzig. In the gap where human resource departments and international offices cannot offer comprehensive individual support and advice, Welcome to Leipzig will provide additional support, information and contacts.

Wissenschaftskino Leipzig

Many cinema, television and documentary films address important social issues. The relationship between reality and fiction is very different and often questions remain open after the cinema experience. At the Wissenschaftskino Leipzig, you have the opportunity to discuss precisely these questions with experts after the film experience. The events take place at the Zeitgeschichtliches Forum Leipzig.

Lange Nacht der Wissenschaften

Leipzig is a city of science!
Every two years you can experience this with all your senses. From 6:00 p.m. to midnight, there are numerous offers at 58 locations. You can visit institutes, laboratories, lecture halls, magazines, archives and houses, you can talk to scientists and researchers and what usually remains hidden from you will be on display that night.
